In my latest video, I set out to answer a question many content creators and everyday users often ask: do we really need to spend extra money on a premium action camera, or can a more affordable one perform just as well? To find out, I decided to compare two very different models—the DJI Osmo Action 3 and the SJCAM C110+—side by side, in a variety of real-world conditions.
This comparison isn’t about specs on paper—it’s about real-world performance, durability, and usability, especially for people who want to record rides, trips, or daily adventures without breaking the bank.
Setting Up the Test
To make the test as fair and consistent as possible, I designed and 3D-printed a custom dual action camera holder that could mount both cameras side by side. This allowed me to capture identical footage in every scenario and evaluate how each performed under the same conditions.
The test included several key stages:
- Daytime bicycle ride through Sofia
- Battery and overheating test indoors
- Night POV drive test
Both cameras were configured identically—4K at 30FPS with stabilization enabled (except during one noted instance later in the test).

Daytime Test: Real-World Cycling in Sofia
The first test took place on a sunny day in Sofia, Bulgaria. I mounted both cameras on my chest using the dual holder and went for a bicycle ride through the city.
Throughout the ride, I commented live while switching the audio between the two cameras in post-production. This allowed viewers to clearly compare not only the video quality but also the microphone performance of each device.
Both cameras were recording the same view, displayed side by side in the final video. This made it easy to see differences in color accuracy, dynamic range, contrast, and stabilization performance.
Observations:
- The DJI Osmo Action 3 produced more vibrant and balanced colors right out of the camera.
- The SJCAM C110+ showed slightly cooler tones and less dynamic range, but the image was surprisingly sharp and detailed for its price.
- Audio quality was noticeably different—DJI’s microphone offered richer sound, while the SJCAM was a bit more compressed, but still clear and usable.
Overall, both performed admirably for casual outdoor recording.
Battery & Overheating Test
For the next test, I wanted to see how both cameras would handle long-duration recording and heat management—a crucial factor for vloggers and travelers.
I placed both cameras side by side on a flat surface indoors, with a smartphone timer visible in the frame. The test was filmed from another phone mounted on a metal arm, recording the entire process. I then sped up the footage 100x in editing to show the duration more efficiently.
Both cameras were set to 4K 30FPS with stabilization ON and started recording at the exact same time.
Results:
- After 28 minutes, the DJI Osmo Action 3 overheated and automatically shut down, even though it still had 71% battery remaining.
- The SJCAM C110+ continued recording steadily, lasting an impressive 1 hour and 38 minutes before the battery finally died—without overheating.
This result was one of the biggest surprises of the test. While DJI is a well-known brand with excellent build quality and stabilization, the SJCAM proved to be the more thermally stable option during long continuous recording.
Night POV Drive Test
The final test was a nighttime POV drive through the streets of Sofia. This scenario tested each camera’s low-light performance and stabilization under artificial lighting and movement.
Unfortunately, I forgot to turn on stabilization on the DJI Osmo Action 3, so its field of view (FOV) appeared wider in the footage. However, this still provided a useful side-by-side comparison of each camera’s low-light clarity and noise handling.
To make the footage more comparable, I color-graded the SJCAM’s video in post to match the DJI’s tone as closely as possible. This helped visualize how much difference good color correction can make, even for a lower-cost camera.
Observations:
- The DJI Osmo Action 3 handled shadows and highlights better, producing a cleaner image overall.
- The SJCAM C110+, while noisier, still maintained respectable detail and exposure control for its price range.
My Final Verdict
After testing both cameras in multiple real-world situations, here’s my honest conclusion:
- The SJCAM C110+ is an incredible value. For its price, it offers reliable performance, long recording times, and surprisingly good image quality.
- The DJI Osmo Action 3 is a premium camera, delivering better stabilization, color science, and overall usability—but its overheating issue at 4K 30FPS is disappointing for long sessions.
In my video, I summed it up:
“The best camera is the one that keeps recording.”
And in this test, that honor goes to the SJCAM C110+.
Still, for professional work, reliability, and ecosystem support, I’ll continue using the DJI Osmo Action 3. It’s a trusted brand with consistent firmware updates and accessories—but I was genuinely impressed by how well the SJCAM performed in this comparison.
